Happy 238th America. While we spend this holiday relaxing and having fun with family and friends let us not forget the real history behind the anniversary of our nation’s independence. That is, “a drop in the Ocean” of colonial British and black Americans and immigrants ultimately risked life, liberty, and property to establish a new nation whose instituted singular purpose was and is “to secure these rights” to its citizens.
This explicitly stated purpose for why “Governments are instituted among Men” was certainly revolutionary for its time, and has remained so to this day – so much so that even in these modern United States, power mongers daily seek to corrupt the real purpose of the state by wielding illegal authority and inundating us with disingenuous and/or misinformed contrarian rhetoric.
Contemplate this weekend while enjoying your relative plenty the following words of Thomas Jefferson, America’s third president and author of the Declaration of Independence:
The purpose of government is to enable the people of a nation to live in safety and happiness. Government exists for the interests of the governed, not for the governors… That government is best which governs least, because its people discipline themselves. If we are directed from Washington… when to sow and when to reap, we will soon want for bread.
