“Trust Me”

In response to Senator Rand Paul’s filibuster of John Brennan’s nomination as Director, Central Intelligence Agency, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters today that “the president has not and would not use drone strikes against American citizens on American soil.”  This exchange followed an official declination provided to the senator by Attorney General Eric Holder on behalf of the president.  So, just to be clear, President Obama would not drop a missile on top of someone in America.  Just like he would not engage in clandestine rendition, would close Guantanamo Bay, would terminate the habeas corpus suspensions of American citizens, would not raise taxes on the “99%,” would not run a privately funded campaign, would “reach across the aisle,” would bring “transparency” to the White House, would reduce the deficit(s), would not force us to lose our health care coverage (if we liked it), would not ceaselessly issue illegal executive orders, would carry out open and public debate over pending legislation, and would be a general, all-around nice guy…

Believe what you will, but killing Americans without due process – which, incidentally, is specifically codified by law as representing a criminal trial and appeal process where the defendant is allowed to challenge the evidence presented against him/her – is as explicitly unconstitutional as it gets, regardless of what the president and his cabinet proselytize, and nothing regarding whose dirt is underfoot changes that.  Regardless of whether or not one believes that terrorists – by whoever’s definition and judgment – deserve to die expediently, one cannot simply ignore the brazen violation of such a constitutional prohibition without necessarily diminishing the sovereignty of all other elements of it (including the legitimately granted authority of that individual).

The president cannot – indeed, no one can – both have their cake and scarf it down ravenously too.
